Agoria - Libellules

  • We've had "headfuck techno" emerge as a genre this year, so why not "crepuscular techno" too? And if anyone is equipped to represent this new breed at the United Nations Council of 4/4 beats, then I can think of few better than Agoria, whose Infine label has, up to now, performed more than well in the field of unpredictability. This is Agoria's first release on the imprint and, hot on the heels of "Solarized," has plenty to live up to. "Libellules" is a piece of fragile, crystalline beauty spread across ten minutes. It's the techno equivalent of being wrapped in cotton wool and bounced across the alleys of your mind—effortless psychedelic dance music inspired as much by classic fairy tales and nursery rhymes as anything else. "Magnolia" is cut from much the same cloth but while it uses similar motifs, it's more intense and driving. It's difficult to make the claim that it's more dance floor-orientated than "Libellules" but it nonetheless complements it perfectly. Like an updated version of the Cocteau Twins, Agoria has succeeded in creating an ambience all his own. There's a depth of feeling here often absent from productions with more clarity. It's this wooliness that pushes the music into areas previously reserved for the music of the spheres. Celestial stuff indeed.
