Delano Smith - Midnite EP

  • Delano Smith continues his winning streak with this counterpart to last year's Sunrise EP. Whether it be on his own Mixmode imprint, moonlighting on Undertones or—here—on Third Ear again, Smith has showcased a broad range of angles from which to approach deeper house music. On Midnite, he once again provides a varied sampling of what he's capable of. "A Special Kind" is the sort of vocal loop disco-inclined house that will go down well with 2000 and One's Amsterdam cabal or the Mannheim clique, "Dee's Gruv" goes deeper and ends up somewhere near the cloudy and hypnotic early morning sound of Secret Sundaze and "The Explanation" pumps with the sort of moody menace that works in Berlin's Panorama Bar. "Truth," meanwhile, bounces up and down with the titular vocal sample pounding its single thought into your head. It's perhaps the least interesting of the four, but that's simply down to taste. With so much to go around, it's unlikely that house heads won't find something to love here.
