Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts - The Pussy Shepherd

  • If you've seen Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts' live show over the past few years, you'll instantly recognize bits and pieces of the tunes presented on his latest 12-inch for Musique Risquée. Guillaume's powerful live set often features plenty of gospel vocals ("Safety Meetings"), up-tempo house music ("Raw") and luscious comedowns ("The Pussy Shepherd"), all presented with a bit of live drumming. The EP is the first time that the hugely talented producer has been able to really capture a sliver of what makes his performances so great. You can easily tell, for example, how a bit of added percussion would spice up "Safety Meetings"' already hypnotic piano-led groove. Or how "Raw" is the moment just before the set goes into hyperdrive, a perfect set-up for the temperature to be ratcheted up even further. "The Pussy Shepherd," for my money, though, is the best thing here with droning organ chords that play out underneath a wistful blues singer. His lament comes over ten long minutes with a healthy beat to back him up, but his pathos shines through easily, subtly reminding us that you don't necessarily need to cut someone down to a single word when sampling them. Sometimes it's worth hearing everything they have to say, much like it's worth hearing everything Guillaume has to say here.
