Tolga Fidan - So Long Paris

  • When I drop the needle on a new Vakant release, I usually expect the first bars to contain sparse percussion and otherworldly synths. No such luck with "So Long Paris," though. The most recent release on their limited series opens with polyrhythmic cowbells that bounce against shuffling hats while a funky bassline takes care of the lows. There is no mistaking, this is a house record. Percussion, strings and hats are all added at the right moments, while a crisp two-note synth keeps time. And when the sax comes in, you'd be forgiven for looking down to check you hadn't accidentally put on a platter from Cecille or 8Bit. Tolga Fidan hinted that he has this type of groove within him on his last release for Vakant, and this is the arrival of that promise. With the Mannheim sound currently ubiquitous, it's a track that fits in perfectly with the times.
