Milton Bradley - Psychological Drama

  • If there is one thing that our techno forefathers showed us, it's that if you want to get your music out there, you have to do it yourself. And the most surefire way to do it? Create your own label. That's the lesson that Milton Bradley has apparently taken, at least. A DJ of close to 20 years, the mysterious producer behind the Do Not Resist The Beat label clearly had a goal in mind—to create dark, brooding techno that he couldn't find anywhere else. Not much is known about Bradley, other than what can be gleaned from a minimal website and a couple random photos scattered about the internet. What we do know for sure, though, is the music. The third EP in the DNRTB series gives us a three-tracker of varied prescriptions. The industrial mystique of "Derealization" brings visions of ghostly warehouses and horror movie soundtracks—its metallic snare smashes and wispy atmospherics are layered over a tough kick and throbbing bassline. Any DJ worth his weight could weave this track in multiple times in a set for different purposes. Paired up on the B-side is the short but marvelous ambient drone "Hypnagogic." As simple in creation as it is in definition, it's a perfect space-out ending to the chilling side of the record. On the reverse, "Pychological Drama" tiptoes that fine, Berghain-esque line of dubstep, techno and industrial. The off-kilter electro beat, the droning, warped bass, a dash of haunting vocals and scattered, resonating slaps equate to a pristine recipe for those ghoulish, late-night head-fucks we all love to embark upon.
