Memory Foundation - Reptiles in Exile

  • They've been absent for the past few years, but on Reptiles, Vienna's Memory Foundation, AKA Michael Peter and Martin Retschitzegger, show that they've haven't lost much. Like anyone else, though, they're not impervious to the passage of time, and this release on Andy Vaz' label sees them mellow out, returning with a more considered sound than their defining steely techno output for Central. Indeed, "Words" is more in keeping with the style they usually explore on their Glory B side project, featuring soaring bass, epic strings and niggling electronic riffs that are equal parts Warp "intelligence" and UR outer space blips. "Bass Traveler" and "Summer Vision" both continue with this theme, as warm chords and infectious melodies are combined with warm bass licks. While Memory Foundation aren't mapping out a new sound, the evocative atmospheres and painstaking production typifies an approach that has only yielded 15 releases in as many years. Unfortunately, there is one disappointing track: in contrast to the rest of the EP, "Reptiles" is stripped back tech house, striving to sound contemporary. In so doing, it threatens to become a blemish on the Austrian duo's impressive comeback—but it quickly fades from memory once the other tracks are played repeatedly.
