Disco Nihilist - Disco Nihilist

  • Disco Nihlist doesn't make his shit on a computer—as he proudly claims on his MySpace page. Instead, he makes tracks with the simplest of hardware, and allegedly records it onto cassette to add even more grittiness to the proceedings. It's an aesthetic that fits remarkably well with its label, Love What You Feel, a project conceived by Infinitestatemachine blogger and sometime RA contributor Thomas Cox, AKA Pipecock. Whatever your take on Pipecock—a beloved and hated figure on the internet for his brash opinions and strident views—it's clear that the Nihilist's debut on the label isn't the sort of "nonsense" that Pipecock so often rails against. What we get on these four untitled tracks, then, are stripped down dance floor tools that revel in simplicity. A four note bass pulse makes up the major portion of the melody on A1, with constantly shifting strict drum patterns keeping things fresh. A2, meanwhile, gets busier, immediately jumping into a classic acid framework and ending abruptly, leaving you wanting more. B1 is just as quick, but never quite matches the rough-and-ready enthusiasm of its predecessor, preferring a tempered approach that never allows it to take off. But B2 finishes the platter off nicely, splattering acid against the wall amid a number of bleeps, bloops and musical percussion. Simple, effective and refreshingly nonsense-free.
