Sankt Göran - My Friend Played the Guitar

  • It's only been two years, but we've finally been graced with a new song from Göran Dahlström, who first appeared on the "Scandobalearic" scene in 2007 with a two-tracker from Bear Funk. Thankfully, you don't need to do much digging to figure out what "My Friend Played the Guitar" sounds like. You pretty have 90% of it in the title. The titular guitar, it should be said, doesn't play a starring role necessarily. Instead, it's a rhythmic device that holds the track together while tear-drop synths more often provide the hook on this relatively sedate tune ripe for closing time. Brendon Moeller under his Beat Pharmacy pumps up the beat in his dub version of the track, and clearly relishes the chance to put some of his talents to the test on a track that's a far cry from his usual fare. His is the best thing here for DJ use, as it pounds the theme into your skull and awaits a mix with open arms. Blackbelt Andersen, meanwhile, takes a stranger tack with a shuffling groove and cosmic waves of synthesizer that approach more ambient climes. While it's perhaps OK for more aquatic-themed dance floors, it's hard to say that it'll make its way into many DJs bags. It's found just as much time on my home turntable, though, which illustrates the fact that this a true package of tunes, and not simple club fodder.
