Shigeru Tanabu - Adrian

  • Better known as the guitar player on some of Brendon Moeller's releases and live dates, Shigeru Tanabu finally takes the solo plunge on François K's Wave Music label. Tanabu's original mix of "Adrian" kicks off smartly with a smooth, rollicking tech house underbelly and a supple one finger keyboard pattern that gleefully ascends in pitch, raising spirits and cigarette lighters into the air with it. That it pushes at the limits of a commercial, almost trance sound is confirmed by the honey-dripping strings that sweep the mix even further up. A little bit of cheese, sure, but not enough to clear all but the most toffee-nosed dance floors. The original is sandwiched by two remixes from fellow countryman Hideo Kobayashi and experienced journeyman Jerome Sydenham, both of whom retain the pitched-up pace. Sydenham shapes his remix on the housier side, working the cymbals nicely while filling out the original keyboard riff into warmer dub pulses. The long waves of metallic ambience and police sirens that blow through the background contrast nicely with the sticky strings. Kobayashi, on the other hand, tries to leave them alone, although they do find their way into the mix by the end. There's simply no time in his frenetic, oscillating techno workout. Hard-wired and driving with the essence of the original's trance elements, it's easily the best of the three tracks though all will work nicely.
