Kris Wadsworth - Mainline

  • Laurent Garnier's DJ feedback rarely offers anything of substance, but his response to Kris Wadsworth's "Mainline" hits the nail on the head: "...super simple, but super strong." The track is of that special breed that strips things down to the bare minimum, but whose hypnotic quality wins the day. The elements don't have to do much here because the uncredited female vocal does the heavy lifting, both in its (relatively) unaltered state, and the micro-sampled repetition that forms the base of the tune along with the unadorned kick. And, well, that's about it. For five minutes or so, the listerner is strung along before a break comes in to remind you that nothing much else has happened. Simultaneously an amazing tool and an amazing track, it's one of the best tracks to be released thus far in 2009. Sei A and Jimmy Edgar turn up for remixing duties, with the former further cementing his reputation as Apparat's talented house-oriented kid brother and the latter adding a subtle modulating synth line that slowly burns its way down to the wick over the course of its ten minutes. I listen to all three just about as often as I can. Absolutely essential.
