- Irish producer John Daly has consistently been putting out music since his 2006 debut under his own name on his Feel Music imprint. After being taken under the wing of Francois K's Wave Music, Daly has branched out recently to a variety of imprints, spreading his multi-faceted sound to all corners of the globe. His latest 12-inch, and first for Drumpoet Community, is among his best.
"This Is a Lonely Beat" marries a chunky kick, and a swelling organ bit to a cut-up sample st-st-st-st-stuttering out the title phrase. This combo is soon joined by a deep five note bassline that keeps things humming along nicely. Add in a liquid quivering synth motif in the middle and you've got yourself a winner. While "Lonely Beat" will no doubt rack up the accolades, and plays at your local club, I can't help but keep coming back to this platter for the B-side. "Tunnel Vision" is a more subtle pleasure, a dub house tune that has, well, tunnel vision in its solid focus on a wavering melody and the joys of minute percussion tweaks. Lovely work all around.
