Lump - Confusion

  • There are two types of confusion: The first is perhaps best exemplified by a 2008 clip from E!'s we-watch-it-so-you-don't-have-to show Talk Soup, in which a program was inexplicably interrupted by video of a cat in front of a plate of spaghetti. The second, is what happens on Lump's newest 12-inch for Contexterrior: A slow and inexorable trek from order to disorder. "Confusion" starts off simply enough with a deep kick and two lovely little melodies playing off one another. Things start to move off to the deep end, however, only a few minutes in when forceful dub hits clear things out and things have to begin anew. From there, Lerato drops in to utter the word confusion from about three different directions—and sometimes in three distinct syllables. Lump helpfully pounds away with largely the same groove, but the damage—and confusion—is already done. "Musiclover" isn't nearly as confusing. Or, for that matter, as good. Its relentless groove is good enough, but its forward momentum is neither funk nor stiff. Instead, it lies in that nether region that some might call "mediocre." Matters aren't helped much by a comical voice that jumps into the track a few times to blather about loving music for a few moments. Confusing? That part is, sure. But that's not always a good thing.
