Christian Smith and John Selway - Push Factor

  • Christian Smith and John Selway have been dropping hard-edged, frantically paced techno records for over a decade now, and while none of their discography could be reasonably be described as shy and retiring, in terms of big, brash numbers, they don't come much bigger and brasher than "Push Factor." The track is perhaps best described as the musical equivalent of injecting a stimulant directly into your heart then stepping into an F1 car to burn around a track for a few palpitation-inducing laps. Subtle is not a word that immediately springs to mind, but in a electronic world where the buzz words of music have long been "understated," "stripped-down," "refined" and (perhaps the dirtiest word of all) "minimal," it's nice to hear some producers approach their Macs and banks of hardware with guns blazing and mouths foaming. The bassline of "Push Factor" yanks you in a variety of directions while the hiss and clank of a factory on the brink of a nuclear meltdown echoes around it. Somewhat inevitably, though, it's Oxia's remix that will most likely have the biggest impact on the dank, pounding warehouse parties across the world. French producer Olivier Raymond has barely put a production finger wrong over the last few years and delivers again here with an understated and considered take on "Push Factor." The result is more atmospheric, with a gentler build in tension and a less dramatic breakdown, rounding off the package nicely when coupled with the sledgehammer methodology of the original.
