Goldwill - One Bill

  • Straight out of Hamburg comes this EP from Goldwill. Ralf Schmidt and Henry Behring have collaborated before for a release on Musick Gewinnt Freunde, while Schmidt has remixed on the Einmaleins label with Marc Schneider. Now they bring a release on Was Not Was, the label run by their employers at the German distributor Word and Sound. While the Sascha Dive remix on this 12-inch will get a lot of deserved attention, the original is also a great piece of house music. Beginning with the kind of self-help sample that seems to have disappeared from house music these days, it's a slow hypnotic track with a careful and precise groove. This is early morning dance music with the space to really let the floor work itself back to life. The melody is a distant pulse and the nagging riff is likely to provoke the slowly-realised cheering that only this kind of determined repetition can invoke. Dive's "1.000.000 Mix" meanwhile picks the tempo up and drags the bottom end way down. The track's natural habitat is shifted back by about four hours to peaktime as Dive's trademark locked groove takes over. It's a more psychedelic and even Latin take for the Frankfurt producer and feels like a record that will be both effective and ubiquitous in clubs. Finally D.Diggler of Resopal drops a remix that's the most techno of the three. It's not a bad piece of club music, but falls between a few too many styles to really make you leap from your seat, and isn't up to the level of the two opening tracks.
