Tob Jona - Troika EP

  • Don Williams’ family of labels certainly knows how to sell records in the current climate of illegal downloads and market saturation. a.r.t.less and Mojuba's limited runs and unique artwork (each has different coloured fabric application adorning the sleeve) draws attention to each of his releases. (The usual high quality of releases doesn't hurt either.) Here he brings Sounders Department member Tob Jona to the a.r.t.less fold for an EP of Detroit influenced techno with a contemporary twist. ‘Adiabatic’ occupies the A with a deep workout that builds the tension up slowly with a constant quivering synth line and subdued stabs, topped off by crisp hi-hats and a light kick. It’s unlikely to kick the dancefloor into overdrive, but it's a nice enough hypnotic cut for the late night heads-down crowd. The two tracks on the flipside fare much better, my favourite of the two being ‘Metro 501’. The vibe remains on a foreboding tip, but it's much more suited to peak hours where the floor is full and the dancers are already into the groove. The intertwining synth lines will undoubtedly lock you in stasis as the beats clatter around you, before it all suddenly comes to a halt without warning. ‘Barque’ rounds the EP off with its swirling melody and skittering percussion, and its lush tones are well suited to early on in the night, or late night gatherings when everyone’s had their fill of tougher beats.
