Solomun & Stimming - Remix Session 02

  • Ah, the remix. It may be an established part of dance culture, but it must still feel like a risk to give your baby over to another producer. And as an imprint with such a distinctive sound, it seems odd that Diynamic would bother with them at all—why dilute the brand with outsiders? A band of brothers thus far, it's strange to see anyone aside from the Hamburg three (Solomun, Stimming, H.O.S.H.) and their Lübeck buddies Kollektiv Turmstrasse releasing on the label. Not that I'm advocating for more sublabels in the world, but…uh…isn't this ripe for a sublabel? That was my thought, at least, upon first hearing Anja Schneider and Jerome Sydenham bringing their distinctive sound to H.O.S.H.'s 'Steppenwolf' on Remix Session 01. If they had started with Remix Session 02? I wouldn't have had much to go on. That's because Frankfurt duo Motorcitysoul don't do a ton to Solomun and Stimming's 'Eiszauber' aside from building a different groove around which the elements dance. It's deep house, but with a Diynamic twist—there's no sampled voice telling us how to feel or how deep the results are, it's simply undeniable fact. Sure, it's no radical rework—but when you've got an original this good, why bother? Hamburg resident Lawrence answers that question in his typical style (which unlike Schneider and Sydenham matches up almost perfectly with the Diynamic aesthetic), pitting a synth cloud against a lonely woodblock and a bassline that seems about ready to cry itself to sleep. If you didn't know what you were listening to, you probably wouldn't be able to tell that it was a remix until Lawrence drops the recognizable theme at just past the four minute mark. Even then, he makes it his own, rubbing up complementary depressing synths against it, ensuring that this one never makes it to peak-time. For late nights and sad types.
