Buset - Stay

  • This is, as far as I'm aware, only Buset's second release, which is difficult to believe such is its maturity and assurance. I have to be honest and say that vocal tracks like this aren't really my cup of tea, I find them to be too floaty and lacking cojones, but maybe this is an exception. The original of 'Stay' is a finely-tuned, slightly discordant exercise in compressed breakbeats, but the house remixes take it to another world entirely. I arrived at this 12-inch through the Sei A mix, which cleverly combines a few basic elements to transform the tune nicely. A sparse intro highlights the vocal of the original, and there are haunting strings and handclaps to carry it along, but it's all about that vocal. Markus Enochson has also been drafted in to provide a couple of versions. Enochson is responsible for ‘Red Coffe’, one of last year's most slept-on tracks, and here he uses all his guile to create an understated melancholic monster in both the dub and vocal versions. The vocal treatment is especially notable, and very different from the Sei-A version. Elsewhere there is a Marcoradi remix which, for me at least, borders on the wrong type of trance, and an effort by Pedro Cali, which is a little too predictable and maybe one remix too many. Overall, this is a reasonably strong package with, yes, something for everyone. My personal picks being the two Markus Enochson versions and Sei-A's. Records like this always play with fire though as it's rarely possible to like everything on offer.
