- Berlin power duo Exercise One edit down long live jams into tracks, and the A-side here, ‘Intensity’, smacks of a real transcendental moment in the studio. Although it may be computer music, it has a liberated feel to it, built around a familiar Exercise One shuffling bass, this time complimented with a more hard-edged and deeper tech feel, while still being minimal enough to call Mobilee home. But most sublime are the twisting and unravelling bleeps, as well as the ricocheting percussive riddles riding above. Everything locks together and, of course, lifts to a real intensity that is further compounded by a superb breakdown towards the end. Masterful indeed.
The B-side has a lot to live up to then. ‘Ceremony’ feels a little bit more composed than played. More downtempo and simple, it remains content to amble along and show off a few percussive sparks here and there until overloading on ambient waves. It’s a good track, but it just doesn’t stand alone outside of a set, nor does it have much of an emotional lure. Regardless, ‘Intensity’ is a pure ride worth the price of entry alone.
