Kadebostan - Grand Theatre EP

  • Kadebostan was responsible for one of the unexpected delights of 2007 with his debut 12-Inch ‘Caracas Soul’ on Freude Am Tanzen. The tracks on it stood out both for the quality of production and for the sheer amount of emotion presented, a double whammy that very clearly established the Swiss producer’s talent. His sophomore effort sees the same loving construction repackaged into ‘cute minimal electronica’ where pianos and cellos back up vocals sung in Spanish while filters and effects intrude abruptly only to leave just as quickly. The result is evocative of louche nights passed languidly in lounges populated by crooners, with every element radiating warmth and tactility. ‘5.51 AM’ is the clear winner of the three tracks, with just enough punch to pull the listener through smoothly. On the flip, ‘Batalla en el Cielo’ and ‘Sofia on Stage’ are just a tad too tranquil to be quite as engrossing. The rich layers of sound they contain take a little too much effort to unravel, something that doesn’t contrast perfectly with the atmosphere of comfortable indulgence that this release explores. Even so, the carefully textured lushness that line their sonic surfaces gives these tracks a velvety pleasure that, whatever their other flaws, is hard to ignore. This is definitely not one to dance to, as the beats seem to come and go in accordance with the whim of the melody, but if you don’t mind dangling your toes into something a little too decadent for the floor, the Grand Theatre EP is absorbing and fun, and even if it’s not quite as good as Kadebostan’s last release, it shows that ‘Caracas Soul’ was no flash in the pan.
