Jens Zimmermann - Space Migration 3000

  • Does anyone know what to make of Jens Zimmermann? A flick through any of his records is enough to glean that he is an extremely talented producer who loves to experiment. His tracks ooze skills and are immaculately designed, and yet often, there's something missing that stops them from being jaw-dropping. Perhaps the problem is that Zimmermann's music isn't always distinctive or oozing with individualism. He's not ripping anyone off, but nor do you instantly recognise his tracks in a way that you might with similarly talented artists, which is a real shame. Here, ‘Hey Freak’ is a surgically clean slice of minimal house which doesn't really grab the attention even if it's perfectly passable. On the flipside ‘Sequenz 31’ is a majestic and epic piece of experimental electronic music which is extremely similar to Âme’s ‘Fiori’. With its bleak washes of melody, it's a beautiful piece of night driving music, even if it does feel a bit too well studied. But overall that's the problem here, a lack of ideas to match up to the perfect sounds and production. Ultimately, Space Migration 3000 is a frustrating listen, during which you know that with the skills he has Zimmermann should be blowing our minds, not making us nod sagely. Perhaps that day is still to come.
