Dennis Ferrer - P 2 Da J (Tiger Stripes Remix)

  • A lot of talent, a little bit of luck. You don't need much else to succeed in the world. Just ask Dennis Ferrer, whose string of singles over the past few years almost singlehandedly kickstarted Europe's renewed fascination with deep house. Ferrer's merging of tech and soul isn't all that new, but no one has done it more successfully. Many should be familiar already with the almost unremarkable original. Taken from Ferrer's 2006 album The World As I See It, it’s fairly unremarkable, built around (presumably) Ferrer's panting and uh-huhing and an almost distracting blast of a chord. Tiger Stripes takes these elements, however, and takes the groove to an irresistible place. The chords slot neatly into place, a muted siren from the original takes prominence as the melodic theme and those uh-huh's and pants have never sounded better. Like Ferrer, Tiger Stripes rides the divide between tech and Afro-flecked dance music: this remix would fit just as easily on Liebe*Detail as King Street Records. Stripes’ “Beats” version is predictably a harder-edged affair, emphasizing the vocals and pumping the bass to maximum volume. The dub, on the other hand, is fascinating, if only because it adds rather than subtracts. The (only slightly) kinder, gentler Ferrer is carried away by a billowing chord progression that half-heartedly aims for prog’s epic heights. It’s a confusing B-side, one whose mashing of genres doesn’t quite gel. There’s a lesson in there somewhere: merge two styles and you’re fine, but merge three and you might overegg the pudding.
