H.O.S.H. - White Elephant

  • 2007: The year classical music broke? It seems that way, what with Sebbo's 'Beirut Boogie,' the Diynamic label's sensational run and even Stefan Goldmann's 20th century choral wanderings. Either way, it's certainly benefited H.O.S.H., aka Hamburg’s Holger Behn. He's gone from strength to strength this year utilizing wind instruments as the basis for "the weird" in his tech-house tracks, most notably on 'Steppenwolf.' Behn's first Kindisch foray doesn't sound all that strange on first listen. It's got the normal phalanx of Diynamic horns, the subtle build-up, the breakdown, the triumphant climax. But one must only remember the title to give him credit: Behn's working with the splashing trumpet of a braying elephant here -- and he somehow gets it to sing. Sure, the bassline is a little too busy for its own good, but when you're stuck trying to find enough vegetarian food to keep that guy happy in the studio, these things'll happen. The only elephant in the room on 'Don Alfredo' is Diynamic's co-label head Adriano Trolio. I say elephant only because it's almost impossible to tell exactly what Adriano brings to the table. If it's the focus on the floor characterized by the track's deep house strut, then I can't help but approve. If it's the sudden breakdown at about three-and-a-half minutes in, even better.
