Redshape - Unfinished Symmetry

  • Redshape is on fire with this, his third 12” on his own label Present. It seem that lately his time on the road playing live in major and not-so-major European cities has given him the confidence and experience to take his sound to the next level. I'm happy to report that both tracks here are epic gems and that this is one of the most memorable singles of the year. Cut on red vinyl, what you get is two sides of incredible, progressive techno sculpted and hammered from an analogue slipstream into a slowly arriving kaleidoscopic rush. This is hardly trance or super high octane techno, but rather some of the most head-spinning, danceable and alluring music around. ‘Unfinished Symmetry (Parts 1 & 2)’ essentially forms one evolving and diffusing side-long track. It's indescribably good, as is the B1 ‘Black Dust’, but I'll give it my best shot: Listening to both is like driving, feeling the landscape rush away beside you as you concentrate on the vanishing point of the horizon. That's to say that both sides here have real motorik value, chugging through ever-changing rhythms and drifting, sliding patterns of atmosphere. It's an EP built from impressively live and fleshy analogue rhythms and lava lamp synthscapes, improvised and helix-like in shape. Importantly, ´playing´ rather than programming appears to be key here, and the outcome is some of the most patiently organic techno around. These are the type of tracks you could drop and let ride until the groove runs out, and then happily drop the needle back to the beginning again. Spectacular stuff.
