Nick Solé - World Dubbing

  • Mojuba is back with another slab of maddeningly limited wax, this time courtesy of Nick Solé, also known to the world as Karsten Kaufmann, owner and operator of the venerable mBEAT record store. Solé is no stranger to Mojuba, having been responsible for the imprint’s lovely inaugural release 'Minimal Summer' back in 2005, but his latest emission of deep, chord driven house is without doubt one of Mojuba’s finest releases to date. The title track is an epic 15-minute journey that is the very definition of a slow burner. Sputtering into existence as a minimal arrangement of ambient loops, 'World Dubbing' blooms lazily with each element taking its sweet time to introduce itself: aqueous pads interweaved with supple delay feedback, a steady bass pulse, swelling keys, and bubbling effects that erupt into dramatic licks of sound. The effect is hypnotic and engaging - this is a solid, laidback groove that is a nice introduction to Kaufmann’s land of rhythm. 'Children,' on the flip, is a more direct affair, with the kick pumping a steady 4/4 from the record’s very first bar. Similar in vibe to Lawrence’s 'Pond' 12” or the recent output of Mojuba labelmate Sven Weisemann, it's built from bustling hand percussion and astral washes of sound, and when the smoky-eyed Rhodes keys come in near the end, Kaufmann takes the EP out on the same note it came in on: a whisper. Considering Mojuba’s wont to print their releases in ridiculously low quantities, you should buy this on sight. You’ll be kicking yourself later when you hear some DJ spinning it and realize that it’s long been sold out.
