Gabriel Ananda - Stream of Consciousness

  • For one so prolific Gabriel Ananda keeps the quality exceptionally high. Last year's 'Doppelwhipper' managed to be both a shamelessly giddy Ibizan anthem and the 2007 poll winner for Germany's highly credible Groove magazine. His short-lived 'Bassmaschinchen' project for Treisbtoff showed what was possible from just bass and drums, and with 'Bambusbeats' he's practically invented his own mini-genre, 'tribal minimal'. His latest 12'' finds him raiding the recycle bin somewhat, but being Ananda the results are still rewarding. The self-titled A side explores the same ambivalent terrain as 'Miracle Whop', his Cologne pedigree present in those sun-kissed cotton-ball synths and wierd looped anti-melodies, while the intensity gradually blasts off the scale and the drums keep chugging. 'Shake Ready' meanwhile picks up where 'Bambusbeats' left off, looking more to complex Latin rhythms than the African barrage of the album. An out-of-whack conga-line opens things before the kick comes in, and there you pretty much have it. Trying to match the two however is like following the contrasting pitch dots around the turntable. One of the intriguing qualities of Ananda's tracks is how he manages to be both destructive and seductive within the same track, making the most relentlessly barbed tools sound sexy, in a indulgently sadistic manner. These aren't his finest moments, but they're versatile, different, and bound to satisfy most audiences.
