Nathan Coles – Step On The Break/Give A Flying Funk

  • Coming straight and fresh out of the 10 Kilo label in the UK is this nice little 12” from Nathan Coles. Hardly a newcomer to the breaks scene, Nathan has had previous releases put out on previous 10 Kilo compilations. On this release we see him put out two awesome tracks and following in the current breakbeat trend of putting a breaks track on one side and a more 4/4 tech-house outing on the other. Side A. Step On The Break This is more of a minimal track as the breakbeat is the dominating sound here. Going on a slightly 2-step kind of vibe, hence the title of this track, this has a nice solid breaks feel using a very stabby bass drum beat. Accompanied by some film-like female vocal samples and a few techy stabs here and there, this one is more for the post-climactic section of a set. Quite nice! Side B. Give A Flying Funk … and a huge funk it is! This side is on a more 4/4 tribal tech-housey kind of tip, with some nice African percussion elements thrown in (conga drum etc.). After a slow build up, the heavy bassline kicks in and some old-skool disco samples proclaiming that “we got the funk!” add to the funky feel of this cut. Nice!
