Dusty Kid - Anatome EP Vol. 1

  • Hot on the heels of his amazing EPs on Kling Klong and Systematic, Dusty Kid returns with another outstanding double barrel shot to the face, this time on Cologne label Boxer Recordings. ‘Kore’ kicks off with the exactly the same wamp wamp bassline as Thomas Schumacher’s ‘Red Purple’ (!), over which Dusty Kid carefully trickles in a hooky melody. And while it is all very reminiscent of Bodzin (Schumacher’s co-producer of ‘Red…’), you’d do well to overlook the fact because the track is simply…quality. The trick is in the breakdowns: Each is built up carefully, enticing you with rising bleeps and sweeps until you’re begging for the drop, and unlike a lot of recent electro-end-of-minimal stuff, this time it actually doesn’t let you down when it comes. And the B-side is great too. Built from fifties sci-fi pings, a big bouncing bassline and horror movie keys, it has a bit of a Creature From the Black Lagoon goes clubbing feel to it. At almost fourteen minutes long, it could have easily gone stagnant, but the middle section sheds the playful bass and replaces it with a Joris Voorn-style thumping line that keeps it energised. I’m completely blown away by this EP. At the midway point of 2007, this is the best I’ve heard all year. All hail Dusty Kid.
