Crookers - Funk Mundial #3

  • It all seems to be about baile funk at the moment. With Bonde Do Role's album about to hit the streets, Modular pushing Buraka Som Sistema and M.I.A dropping new songs every month, you're going to have to bury your ears in the sand to avoid the sound of the Rio beat. In this, Italian duo Crookers go down the more housey diahorrea-bassline route normally associated with Sinden. And if they carry on with releases like this, current dons of sub bass sadism Dubsided had better watch out, because it is disgustingly brilliant. All three main tracks are quite similar in that they're uncomplicated, a bit daft and built around grotesque bass. The most blunt is ‘Atomic Baile Boy’, a monstorous instrumental which should tear a new asshole in any reasonable dancefloor. ‘Para De Gracinha’ (Stop Making Fun of Me) featuring MC Leka, has a similar M/O but with the added bonus of people rapping in (hacked up) Portuguese about rude things. It has more of a video game feel to it than ‘Atomic Baile Boy’, and nods more strongly towards rave. ‘Soca Ali Baba’ appears to be the most respectable track here, but then it mugs you with it's low range thuggishness. There's baile breakdowns, but this, like the other two, is about mindlessly big booty that make Fingerlickin' Records toughest cuts sound like a toddler playing a triangle. If you like Sinden/Dubsided/Trevor Loveys kind of stuff, you'll adore this. But don't expect your neighbours to.
