Escort - All Through The Night

  • Escort have been quietly putting out some of the best nu disco around for a while now, and continue to do so on this EP. Like early releases on Daniel Wang's Balihu label, their songs have that intangible and euphoric quality which is unique to good disco. It's hard to do right, but when it's done properly it sounds splendid. And ‘All Through The Night’ is splendid. The original is very well executed and tightly put together. The most appealing part is, like Metro Area, Escort nod to the past but keep it very very contemporary. Along with a female vocal rapping about sex (it's disco - what else?), you have Lindstrom-esque cosmic breakdowns, noises that sound like they're sounding like analogue synths and liberal use of a cowbell, as popularised by the likes of trendy dance/guitar crossover bands such as !!!. 'All Through the Night' is a breathless five minutes which, unless you're ears aren't working, will stick in your head. Okay, so the vocals are a little cheesy, but there's always the instrumental if you're feeling more Metro Area than Sylvester. The Rapture take over remix details but their Hush Hush rework removes much of the exuberance of the original to make it into a more epic, 4 a.m. minimal mind bender. Vocals get chopped into snatches and the uplifting instruments are replaced by moodier and spookier effects. These are sprinkled over a far more eerie beat that sounded a little too like the theme from Bruce Lee's 'Enter the Dragon' theme for my liking. The effect is to render a hands in the air singalong gem into another E headfuck. Which is just what we need.
