Christian Smith & John Selway - Transit Time

  • We all have different viewpoints on what techno is and where it belongs in our lives. For those who feel techno is noise for driving people loco in clubs, the latest from Smith & Selway will no doubt be manna from heaven. ‘Transit Time’ is a single from the forthcoming longplayer ‘Lightning Strikes’. The main cut is made from a looped bassline and formulaic bits of jagged sound, along with an aimless sample muttering something about “getting a flight”. Unfortunately, it’s a flight that’s headed nowhere – the first track is definitely the weakest link on this EP. Ali Dubfire’s remix fares a little better, but in the end it’s a bit of a headache, too, although one sure to pop up on one of those forgettable summer mix comps. The third track, 'Coming Storm' – ominous by name and ominous by nature – is again one to file under the 'techno is noise' category. Oddly enough, the rhythm pattern sounds very, very similar to Smith's 'Finca Dofi': lots of hats and rattling percussion repeated ad naseum. A handy bit of recycling. Although to be fair, it’s totally geared towards losing the plot in a club, a mission it will no doubt accomplish. Sino, responsible for releasing some decent work from producers such as Steve Rachmad and Paul Mac, fall short by a long shot with this one. The same can be said of Smith & Selway who are a far cry from their 'Altera' and 'Weather' moments.
