Motorcitysoul - Kazan (Exit Cube)

  • Motorcitysoul keep up their high standards with this release for Will Saul's Simple sub-label Aus. It's strange but while this sound is nothing new, Mathias Voigt and C-Rock are pulling it off with a rare aplomb. Deep, groove-laden house seems to be the sound of choice at the moment, and Motorcitysoul’s take on the genre would slip nicely into the set of a wide range of current tastemakers. This material is good enough to stand shoulder to shoulder with the best. 'Kazan' is a fond look back to house's halcyon days, when spirits were innocently lifted from sweaty dancefloors and putting the world to rights seemed less of a career move and more of an idealistic state. It's a tune that takes you into all four seasons simultaneously before depositing you back in reality. Tracks like this succeed because they manage to cross genres effortlessly, ticking all the right boxes in their wake. You're gently jacked from pillar to post but reminded of the importance of the journey by the bass. The My My remix isn't a whole lot different to the original, but everything seems a bit tougher and more rugged. There's also a higher degree of swing and some pleasing crackles and pops filtered into the mix. Records like this are heralding a return to the house sounds that dominated the more discerning dancefloors as in the mid to late nineties. In truth, this sound has never really disappeared completely, it's just that records like this make me recall long lost imprints like Svek and Grow! (to name but two) and make me feel all misty-eyed and nostalgic.
