Nacho Marco - The Sweetest EP

  • Nacho Marco sounds like something Homer Simpson might snack on, but it’s also the name of a Spanish producer now saddling up with the in-form UK house label Freerange. Prog heads will remember Marco for his housey recordings as Loudeast at the turn of the century ('Lights Out' was a big song) and he’s also remixed Vince Watson among others. 'The Sweetest EP' moves in even housier directions, and appears to be his big push for a summer hit. With Francois Dubois on board for remixes, stranger things have happened. 'Wench' has a classic house feel. There are no vocals, but that ever-faithful piano is there, as are those dogged synth jabs. Sounds basic enough, and this is a useful little number, feeling like those London, Kiss FM days before R&B got a look in. White baggy jeans and rave-tops.... who says old-skool is dead? Again the old-skool vibe is present in 'Sugar' with its Noo Yawk garage sound and nods to Strictly Rhythm. When it comes to getting the females moving, you just can't beat a good house record, but this will sound a little retro to some. On the B, Francois Dubois gives 'Wench' an overhaul. There are all the hallmarks of his recent productions, especially ‘Emotional Content’: a decaying synth, uplifting keys and an understated bassline. It’s much more developed than his 'Woman of the Sun' remix, making it a good track for building the floor up. In short: Scotland trumps Spain here, but in total this is still a pretty essential purchase for Freerange fans.
