Kenneth James G - Removing Me EP

  • Have you heard of [a]pendics.shuffle? How about Eight Frozen Modules? Or even K.J. Gibbs? Well, for those not ‘in the know’, they are all Kenneth James Gibson, the man behind the latest EP from reliable UK minimal label Underl_ne. The ‘Removing Me’ EP is a four tracker with something to offer for any minimal DJ. ‘Is It On’ is a bumping foray into funk territory that’s full of sci-fi noise and drones. The A2, ‘Classic Delusion’ has warped vocal snippets, droid-like bleeps and an undeniable rolling bassline that’s bound to damage dancefloors. On the flip, ‘Removing Me’ is a tough, stark experience with rumbling tom patterns, metallic percussion and solemn church bells that keep it moving nicely. The last track, ‘Fingers Do the Walking’, is a departure, but in no way of lesser quality. Abstract percussion dances over solid kicks before a gorgeous low-slung bassline strolls in, creating a massive robotic groover that wouldn’t find itself out of place in the boxes of the likes of Lee Burridge or Grant Dell. Underl_ne has always represented a different take on EDM. Taking a more guerilla approach, it replaces slick packaged graphics with stenciled labels and hand-painted sleeves. This EP is an aural representation of that ethos. It’s organically mechanical. It’s robotic life. It’s a great EP.
