Argy - 1985

  • After flying out of the blocks with a couple of corkers on Poker Flat, it all went a bit quiet on the Argy front. Perhaps the Greek – like any other forward-thinking recent arrival – was formulating some sort of plan to drag himself out of the ever-increasing minimal mire. Actually, we think we've cracked his grand scheme. Bucking the trend, gone West – to New York, circa 1995. Break this seven-minuter down and it sounds like a strong idea: Wild pitch-goes-staccato organ stabs; drifting, siren-like synths; hammering, clipped Detroit-style hats; a booming kick and camp whoops. It's an attempt to update the Sound Factory blueprint… all it's missing is a drag queen shouting 'GITYO'HANDSOFFAMYMAN!'. Problem is, when he pulls all the elements together, it is a muddled mess. Decent idea, doesn't work here. (But please, someone try it again.) As if to further emphasise the point, Liebe Detail roped in NYC stalwart Jerome Sydenham for the remix. I'm sure they expected a deep house re-fix of the original (and that would have been interesting) but it's nothing of the sort. What he delivers is another one of those hybrid prog/house epics – tweaking and dubbing the organ stab and synths and adding a few peaks and troughs, he builds a competent hypnotic version for fans of that Wave sound.
