Sebbo/Lars Wickinger - Beirut Boogie/Villa Incognito

  • Lars Wickinger's 'Villa Incognito' is an admirable excursion in restrained, detailed minimal – multi-layered, the deep synth swells and woodblock percussion add colour, but it never quite gets there. Mind you, Lars could have created the minimal equivalent of the Barcelona Pavillion (wait a minute…) and he still would have been overshadowed by the slightly berserk A-side. Sebbo kicks off with some pleasing found-city-sounds before 'Beirut Boogie' slowly slides in: the crisp, simple beats make it unusually funky while the nervous, metallic synths add a weird tension. But that's nothing compared to what follows – gigantic, dramatic horn stabs worthy of a Buster Keaton flick. PaaaRRRPP! Sounding not unlike an elephant with a trombone got loose in the studio, it's certainly different. Sebbo plays it cleverly from here, adding and subtracting gradual percussive layers and builds, but it's all about them stabs… File beside that James Holden 'Safari' remix in the 'brilliant/novelty weird noises' section.
