- Hot on the heels of one of 2006’s most critically acclaimed singles, Martin Buttrich’s new single ‘Well Done’ wastes no time in claiming a stake in 2007. Once known only for co-production work with Loco Dice and Timo Maas, 2006 found Buttrich stepping out on his own with dance floor destroyer 'Full Clip'. ‘Well Done’ marks Buttrich’s return to Four:Twenty Recordings, with whom Buttrich and Loco Dice released a handful of tracks.
‘Well Done’ blends the percussive persistence of ‘Full Clip’ with the highly nuanced production of Buttrich’s Poker Flat single ‘Cloudy Bay.’ To listen to ‘Well Done’ exclusively in the club would rob the track of its most endearing and tucked-away features, making it something of a bedroom banger. Built on a full-bodied tom line that dribbles down the scale like a waterfall, Buttrich stitches a syncopated two-note piano riff through a deeply melodic bassline. The addition of a swishing second set of percussion and clubby acid scribbles push ‘Well Done’ to a tense breakdown, only to rebuild twice as quickly and rattle to a close.
Those expecting a Luciano-meets-trance loops revision from Serafin’s flipside remix may be surprised by its club-readiness. Tighter drums crisply invite fancy footwork from the dancefloor, lit by acid blurts burning a constant motif throughout the tune. Halfway in, Serafin abandons the theoretical club’s confines for spacious, chiming rhythms to indulge his hypnotic leanings. ‘Well Done’ is as intriguing as it is ambitious, further revealing Martin Buttrich’s many strengths and Serafin’s versatility.
