Abyss - Mind Games

  • Straight outta Naples comes Guiseppe Morabito, aka Abyss. Once the engineering assistant for Italian compatriots Planet Funk, he’s now flying solo with his first big label release, the double A-side ‘Mind Games’ and ‘The Dreamer’ on Ben Watt’s Buzzin Fly imprint. ‘Mind Games’ is a mix of minimal techno beats and bleeping trance melodies. At nine minutes in length, the track has definitely got some epic-ness to it, but it manages to steer clear of the clichéd ‘hands-in-the-air’ crescendo that could easily have occurred. With its lush synths and moody bass, it has a distinct bigroom feel without resorting to simple crowd-pleasing production tricks. ‘The Dreamer’ on the flip is identical in intent to ‘Mind Games’ but with a more tech house feel. A robotic bassline bounces along energetically before the track drops into Balearic trance melodies, and just like the A-side, the sweeping breakdown abruptly stops as the main body bounces back in, as if nothing happened. These tracks are receiving quite a bit of hype at the moment, from plays on Tong’s Radio One show to Digweed including BOTH tracks on his latest mix CD ‘Transitions 2’. This is a great debut release for Abyss and a great signing for Ben Watt and the Buzzin Fly team.
