Ian O'Brien Docker - Totally Alright

  • Indie pop kid Ian O'Brien-Docker is a sort of German answer to Coldplay, and like Coldplay he’s looking for a bit of dancefloor cred - apparently penning middle-of-the-road mush that wouldn't sound out of place on the soundtrack to Dawson’s Creek hasn’t been enough for him. With his eyes on the electronic market, the blonde boy from Hamburg plans to cash in - we're not worthy. However, a glance at who he has enlisted to help him in his venture reveals a certain Martin Buttrich - good hiring practice indeed. Kid Alex’s offering is a half rock/half electro hybrid which is a minor improvement on the original – this wouldn't have required too much effort I'd imagine, and it’d be lucky if it got a spin at an inebriated college disco. On A2 Egoexpress unexpectedly turn New Order influences into a drum and bass headtrip, which is far from totally alright and would swiftly find it's way into a bin in most households. But if like me you found the skip button quick enough, Martin Buttrich's remix is the saving grace, which shows that a good producer can always turn tripe into triumph. A subdued stutter is all that remains of the original as Buttrich reinvents the track with deft synth touches - this is getting an airing by M.A.N.D.Y amongst others, and while it's not nearly in the same league as 'Programmer' (which it sounds like), it’ll do enough to satisfy a fair number of clubbers on their night out.
