- Beyond The Darkness - Limited Edition 2 Track Album Sampler
Recent visitor to our shores Mark Pember aka Meat Katie, once again pulls out the tough breaks sound for this release almost getting into the tech house 4/4 side of breaks and does it with that typical Meat Katie sound – heavy bass (sometimes 2 bass lines), very percussive and as always, full of funk. If the Plump DJ’s have their signature sound then Meat Katie has his own sound too.
A. Meat Katie – Cum Shot
For big fans of breaks, a lot of you out there would be familiar with the breaks anthem Dirty South, and how could you miss it? With it’s funky bass and house like beat, it made all the breakbeat heads out there go crazy for it. Cum Shot has a similar feel to it yet misses out on the 80’s funk style bass line that made Dirty South so good. What is really good is the percussion is brought to the fore this time and this song would be best dropped towards the end of a set, after the climax, to keep the breaks rolling.
B. Koma & Bones - High Rollin’ (Future Funk Squad Mix)
Lately Koma & Bones have done no wrong, taking tech breaks production to the fore front and usually getting the attention of massive breaks labels (TCR, MOB for example) and of course anyone into the break beat sound. For those familiar with the original will know that, once again, it is the bass line that makes the track. Future Funk Squad have gone a little further and turned it from a breaks track to a 4/4 bass heavy bastard, creating something a little funkier than the techy feel of the original.
Aussies were lucky and privileged enough to get Beyond The Darkness 3 weeks before it was released to the rest of the world. Awwww gee thanks Mark. Usually when people think break beats it always the Plumps who first come to mind, but if this is anything to go by, when someone mentions the “funky bass heavy 4/4 side of breakbeat” sound, then Meat Katie should be on the tips of every breabeats heads tongue.
