Klein and Zenker - Delusion

  • Share
  • Rave on. Old hands and label owners Oliver Klein (Mutekki) and Ramon Zenker (Hardfloor) have teamed up on Traum's deep-house offshoot My Best Friend to offer an escape route to the minimal cul-de-sac, both mixes coming at you like good-cop bad-cop. Klein worked with Martin Eyrer to produce 'Kairo' for MBF but it's his first meeting with Zenker and, not surprisingly, the results are not subtle. Their aptly titled 'Delusion' starts off like run-of-the-mill percussive minimal, all drums, pops and rhythm before pulling the rug out three minutes in with the arrival of big, crawling bass tones. These sweep in slowly, enveloping the lower end as bright arpeggios and aerated pads dazzle the top like New Year's fireworks. It's an explosive display of tough, bleak euphoria, like the neo-trance of Paul Nazca or Oxia, and you'll skip heartbeats when Dominik Eulberg plays it loud. Everything winds up neatly, returning to its minimal origins, offering a welcome detour to spice up bland sets and the ideal gift for novice DJs. The b-side is taken up by 'Jussi-Pekka Loves Old Trance Mix', in which the Finnish producer and Frozen North label boss Jussi-Pekka Parikka morphs the original into a jarring trip into nostalgic hard-house. The minor-keyed gloom which drove the original here becomes hands-in-the-air cycles of shiny keyboard stabs and joyous neon melodies pleasantly spiralling nowhere. It's been a while since I've heard music like this and its sheer novelty is amusing but I've always preferred my banging dark and nasty. The original rocks so buy it for that.
