Darftphunk - Light It Up/Right There

  • Darftphunk is the next new signing in Splank Records' growing roster (well sort of). Hailing from the UK, Darftphunk, AKA Steve Jeffery, has been involved in the breaks scene for the past couple of years as a DJ and live PA. He first made a splash with a remix of Myagi's "Release The Hounds" which was released on Splank in 2005. His sound is firmly rooted in funk and disco using the production techniques of breakbeat, so it came as no surprise that Splank had picked up his debut solo release, ‘Light It Up/Right There’. ‘Light It Up’ kicks off with a funky and hard hitting breakbeat and it's not long before a quirky bassline comes into play with a old skool hip hop vocal sample which invites the crowd onto the dancefloor. The tune is filled with a load of electro bleeps, vocal stabs and a growly bass noise - those familiar with Nick Thayer's remix of Circuit Breakers ‘Kick That Bass’ which was recently released on Streetwise will be familiar with the bass on this tune. This is highly reminiscent of the early Fingerlickin sound so those who love their beats funky will definitely enjoy this one. On the flip, ‘Right There’ sticks with the old skool hip-hop-meets-breakbeat theme. This tune sits on the darker side of the yard with a deeper bassline but like the flip features plenty of electro bleeps and stabs. Darftphunk certainly likes his long-winded hip hop samples and sometimes takes small chunks and lays them down throughout the track, so much so that this tune almost takes the much sought after verse-chorus-verse song structure (but not quite).
