- One of the Bay Area's most respected underground MCs, Bukue One is Payback Project's latest signing, making his debut breakbeat spittin’ lyrics on ‘Who Wan Test’ with production courtesy of Payback signing Rebel Sketchy. On remix duties comes one of Texas' best breakbeat producers and DJs, the stellar DJ Love who churns out a ragga-tinged version of the track.
The original starts off with a scratched up a vocal sample of the tune's title before settling into a heavy drum break, funky horn sample and a rockin’ monotonic bassline reminiscent of post big-beat breaks circa ‘98. On the mic Bukue delivers a rapid fire vocal that "makes you say ooo-weee" – it’s similar to the verses he cut for Superstyle Deluxe's "You're Wrong" on Supercharged in late 2005.
DJ Love's remix on the flip features Love's trademark breakbeat - a very gallopy, hip-hop influenced breakbeat with syncopated snares and nice hi-hat work. Love then gives the tune a distinct reggae flavour incorporating a bouncy reggae bassline. During the chorus, he lays down his own beatdown, dropping deft scratching and sampling techniques.
Payback Project certainly has an air of originality with the unique breakbeat they're releasing and this comes as no exception. For those who like their breakbeat funky and hip-hoppy, this is definitely the release for you and I don't doubt for a bit that these will have the crowd grooving on the dancefloor.
