Shane Berry - Losttime EP

  • Shane Berry seems to be functioning as the backbone of Trapez Ltd. with 'Losttime' his third 12" for the label this year. The eponymous A-side could be 'Starts with a Sine Wave' – it starts with the phrase coldly rolled out in a droll female voice and that’s what it does: over kicks, hats and a simple pulse bassline, a sine wave spits and stutters into morse code before cracking up entirely. A shuffling snare worthy of Gene Krupa adds a jazz element, thankfully more Oliver Hacke stutter than Saint Germain glitz, and with few resources Berry crafts an understated early evening gem. ‘Freed’ turns out to be a real acid monster, although you wouldn't know it from its humble, echo-drenched beginnings: percussion in the form of a crisp snare, hats and a syncopated one-note 'pop' accompany a fierce kick as intergalactic swirls sweep in and the hats decay into jets of steam. At the three-minute mark it’s a whole new track: flanging staccato guitar stabs join a winning 303 strobe that instead of twisting and twirling finds its stride and sticks to it. Berry really knows how to shape tried and tested formulas into informed and engaging modern arrangements – that he does it so effortlessly is a real testament to his skills. Another winning installment on Trapez Ltd. and up there with Berry's best work.
