Markese - Oregano

  • Markus Ullrich, aka Markese, is a man with a lot on the go, and an equivalent number of active aliases. A Czech born in Switzerland, the Zurich based producer releases electronic dance under the name Markese, has his own label Little Big Recordings, and performs live as Clos-o-Mat and in GameBoyzOnly act Babychlor. Past releases have been on labels such as Trapez Ltd, and this time we see him in form on Traum sublabel My Best Friend with limited release No.11 for them. Title track 'Oregano' is an upbeat little number, with a lot of fleeting high-end elements, percussion and the like, underpinned by a steady, traditional round analog-style bass. Semi-Nintendo squiggles add character while a slightly detuned textured pad adds support as guitar snippets and a soft melodic lead pad start to take over. Basically a faster track with an uplifting feel and numerous other synth lines and loops entering at points. 'Dirty Bounce Mixmaster 30090' by contrast has a bit of swagger to its beat and bass, an echoed and phased mid-length loop providing rhythmic support, as soft but high-pitched plucked notes also echo around the soundstage. Naturally more electronic elements (a laid-back melodic lead, a stabbed loop) come in, but those key elements spoken for, this track is more about the feel and the semi-lovely, semi-lo-fi sound, which along with minimal stylings, will be the plus here. Overall, a nice package offering something lighter and accessible for later underground house floors on the A, and on the B, Dirty Bounce Mixmaster 30090 will most probably serve well as a warm-up/early-set track for those looking for interesting textures. MyBestFriend stays on track again.
