Lostep - Because We Can / Theme From a Fairytale

  • I know what you’re thinking…it’s about bloody time for the two to finish up that looooong-awaited album. Only a year or is it two now? In the making, Luke Chable and Phil K in their Lostep alias comes out with a deep and gritty two-piece dish of heavy glitches and sliced up bass notes with the second single with the same titled from the forth coming artist album Because We Can, showcases the duo doing anything they want ‘because they can’ (I’m sorry, I know, it’s a bad pun…but I had to, I just did). If you’ve heard this Tech-House monster, you must’ve been wondering “what on earth were they thinking” and you won’t be alone. Something completely leftfield from a history of epic basslines and hard-noise percussions, even James Zabiela was afraid to play this at first. May need a bit warming up as there’s no beautiful melodies or slick breakbeats, but that’s the beauty in it – Lostep and even to an extent, Global Underground, are expanding themselves because they’ve earned that right to explore sounds that they usually don’t create, and they will have a fan base that will give them a chance where others would fail. Because We Can is that 4-ton Ape that's crushing everything and the dino in sight, but still has a soft (well…hard actually) spot in your heart if you give it a chance. Flip sees the pair go about a “Hybrid-like” title with the help of Habersham in their not-so-B-side Theme From a Fairytale. Kinda Ambient, kinda lo-fi Dub with a dreamy loop as the backdrop. If the B-side is any indication of the continue journey the two have in creating music, I certainly want to be the first in line to follow where they’re going. “Theme” reminds me of Boards of Canada without the headtrips, and that’s a good thing. Two polar opposites that may not attract the usual fan, but those who gives it a bit of time will find that Lostep is still pushing out top-notch tracks.
