DJ ojo - Grape Stomping

  • A bulky 2-step track for rough times.

  • "Grape Stomping" was earmarked for release on MAL before Jon K and Elle Andrews even started the label. After hearing some of DJ ojo's dubby selections for Narr Radio and his own show Avant Garbage (which he shares with friend k means), Jon K got in touch with the London-based producer over SoundCloud. A bit of back-and-forth followed before DJ Ojo came up with the 2-steppy "Grape Stomping," which now makes up part of MAL’s first compilation, PRESSURE. The weight and angst of each one of PRESSURE's eight songs is meant to continue the label's underlying contempt towards the sociopolitical climate post-pandemic. "Grape Stomping" captures this with its bulky percussion and sparing use of rugged textures. Metallic scrapes roughen the outlines of each kick drum, and the drums themselves don't so much kick as quake. It's a seismic groove for a compilation (and mood) that's been simmering beneath the surface for quite some time.
