  • Before he was a DJ, producer or founder of a record label, Damar Davis was a drummer. From the onset, "1904"—the lead track from his latest EP, Adullam—presents a zippy, driving bassline augmented by bright hi-hats and a reverberating clap. The hook emerges with a husky, seductive command luring you to the dance floor: "come on." Each iteration is more tempting than the last, especially when bolstered by funky stabs and a billowing dulcet synth riff. Davis's keen ear for liberating, soulful rhythms are evident throughout this West Coast swing track, which manages to be cathartic and cosmopolitan simultaneously, all while reminding us to be a bit more present and a little more loose.
