James Andrew - The Whole Shmagoigle

  • Tech house and electro meet in the middle on this irresistibly retro banger.

  • Since he started putting out records three years ago, James Andrew's sense of melody has been getting bigger and more theatrical. We heard him play with some helium-like synths on 2021's Slice Of Nice, but his latest makes those records sound like wilted birthday balloons compared to this tech house Hindenburg (before the explosion, that is). On "The Whole Shmagoigle" he gets into a exaggerated electro pump with loose drums and a cascade of synth leads, each more flamboyant than the last. When you add in the breathy vocal samples, the track falls somewhere between Salt 'n' Pepa and French hipsters like Sweely or Charonne. It's hard not to think that someone is going to remind you to "push it real good" at some point.
