Jacques Greene - Believe

  • The Canadian producer explores slightly ravier terrain.

  • For the past 13 years, Jacques Greene has shown a real knack for melding faded synths and garage-y house beats with emotional vocal chops. While it doesn't entirely eschew this well-worn formula, his latest single, "Believe," does break the mold a bit. Where most Greene tracks are sumptuous, tranquil, and bleary, "Believe" is more urgent and energetic. It's carried by a shuffling tech house groove and a curt, hard-to-decipher sample that peeks out from behind a woody bassline and frigid pad stabs. The cut doesn't quite soar to the same heights as January’s excellent Bonobo collab "Fold," but it's still exciting to hear Greene push himself into terrain that feels slightly less familiar than what he's given us on other recent releases like Fantasy.
