Reynes - Sonar Searching

  • Disorienting and deceptively complex UK garage.

  • Manchester producer Reynes comes up with a brooding, slippery head-spinner with "Sonar Searching." The fidgety hi-hats register as UK garage, but the snares are more mechanical than the usual 2-step snap. Reynes layers swampy low-end pulses with futuristic shrapnel and a zoetrope of vocal snippets, all of which come and go so rapidly that it leaves you reaching out to grab onto something more solid. When a cool, oscillating synth swans in, there's a hint of grounding, and after the second breakdown, "Sonar Searching" appears to fade out to an underwhelming end. Then, it turns around and spits out a rewarding breakdown that somehow clicks it all into place.
